La utilización de tecnologías reproductivas en la reproducción de los animales domésticos tiene muchos objetivos tales como el control de enfermedades transmisibles por la cópula, facilitar el manejo reproductivo, permitir el intercambio económico de material genético, hacer viable la creación de nuevos y más eficientes sistemas de producción, la generación de crías de sexo y composición genética predeterminada de acuerdo a las necesidades del mercado, la conservación de los recursos zoogenéticos y tal vez lo más importante el incremento de la tasa reproductiva (obtener el máximo número posible de crías) de animales selectos y a la más temprana edad posible (reduciendo intervalo generacional) para lograr la masiva diseminación de genes favorables (genes responsables de alta productividad) en la población de animales productores y lograr el máximo progreso genético por unidad de tiempo.
